Sustainable Materials in Modern Building

Embodied carbon — the emissions locked into the materials and construction of a building — is finally getting the attention it deserves. For decades the industry focused only on operational energy; today the materials themselves are under scrutiny.
We are increasingly specifying engineered timber for structure, which sequesters carbon and dramatically speeds up construction. Where concrete is unavoidable, low-carbon mixes and recycled aggregates cut its footprint substantially. Natural insulation, lime-based finishes, and locally sourced stone reduce both emissions and transport.
None of this means compromising on beauty or durability. In fact, these materials age more gracefully and create healthier interiors. Sustainability and quality are no longer at odds.
